Careers in Automotive Technology
Automotive technicians have the skills to identify and repair problems with gasoline, diesel and hybrid vehicles, and perform the general maintenance that keeps those vehicles running in good condition. Technicians work in independent repair shops, new car dealerships and fleet garages. They may need both a broad knowledge of automotive mechanics and specialized training in different automotive systems.
Employment Outlook: 2020-2030
- The total number of jobs for automotive service technicians and mechanics is expected to increase by 4%
- There will be more than 69,000 job openings for automotive technicians and mechanics during this 10-year period
These ten-year projections for California employment are calculated by the state Employment Development Department, which collects data about the state's workforce and economic trends.
Automotive Technology at De Anza
The Auto Tech Department offers both daytime and evening programs to help you meet your goals.
Students learn from experienced instructors in a 12,000-square-foot training center with 15 lifts, a powertrain laboratory, machine shop, stationary engine lab, dynamometer and the latest in tools and equipment.
NEW! We also offer FREE noncredit courses that don't require placement rests or prerequisites. These courses don't count toward a degree or academic certificate, but they can help you earn a noncredit General Service Technician (GST) certificate.
