Careers in Facility and Sustainable Building Management

Demand is growing for professional facility managers who can oversee safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable bulding and maintenance operations. Building developers and owners are looking for managers who understand energy efficient systems, total cost of ownership, automated monitoring and management systems, strategic facilities planning and effective workplace communication.

- The number of jobs for environmental engineers is expected to grow by 9%
- Jobs for environmental science and protection technicians are expected to increase 12%
These ten-year projections for California employment are calculated by the state Employment Development Department, which collects data about the state's workforce and economic trends.
Facility and Sustainable Building Management at De Anza
The Environmental Studies Department offers two certificates and an associate degree in Facility and Sustainable Building
Management. The program focuses on the business aspects of building operations, while the Energy Management and Building Science program focuses more on the technical aspects. Both programs provide an integrated approach to concepts from physical science, economics and social and political issues.
Courses are designed for students of all levels, including those just beginning their studies as well as professionals who are looking to improve their knowledge and career opportunities. Many classes are taught at De Anza's award-winning Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies. A number of courses are offered online.
