10/21/2026
1:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Conference Rooms A & B - Hinson Campus Center
In honor of Undocumented Student Success Week (Oct. 19th-23), HEFAS (Higher Education for AB 540 Students) warmly invites students, staff and community members to a special screening of the acclaimed documentary Prodigal Daughter/Hija Pródiga, followed by a live Q&A and an intimate art workshop with filmmaker Mabel Valdiviezo.
About the Film:
Prodigal Daughter / Hija Pródiga takes a deeply personal, feminist look into the immigrant experience through the eyes of filmmaker and former punk artist Mabel Valdiviezo.
Prodigal Daughter / Hija Pródiga takes a deeply personal, feminist look into the immigrant experience through the eyes of filmmaker and former punk artist Mabel Valdiviezo.
During Peru’s Fujimori dictatorship in the 1990s, Valdiviezo fled to the United States, leaving behind her family and the life she knew. After 16 years of silence, she returns to a Peru she no longer recognizes, confronting haunting childhood memories, fractured family ties and a past as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S.
Blending intimate vérité scenes with vibrant photo-paintings and youthful animation, the documentary explores belonging, identity, mental health and the gendered dimensions of migration. Challenging the reductive "good vs. bad immigrant" dichotomy, Prodigal Daughter delivers an unflinching, nuanced perspective on healing, art, and diaspora.
