Self-Assessment for Teachers of Young Children Using Reflective Practice: Field Experience


Course Description

In this course, students will utilize the self-assessment approach and reflective practice technique for individualized teacher preparation, emphasizing specific types of teaching environments and interactions that support the development of children's physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills. Students will use field placement to practice and develop professional behaviors, make connections between theories and practices, and build a comprehensive understanding of young children and families. (This course meets NAEYC Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; NBPTS Standards 1 and 4; CEC Standards 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10 and ECE Competencies Standards 1, 3, 4, and 7.)

C D -057.-1YF: This is a hybrid course with an online lecture and an off-campus lab. Students are required to attend the weekly synchronous Zoom lecture on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. Students are also required to complete 8 hours of lab each week, for a total of 120 fieldwork hours during the quarter, at a licensed childcare facility. Lab days and times may vary depending on the student’s availability and the arrangement made with the licensed childcare program. The childcare facility must be located within a 15-mile radius of San Jose so the instructor can visit the program. Students must receive permission from the program director to complete their lab hours in the classroom. All lab hours and seminar hours are required to complete the 120 hours of fieldwork experience for this course. Students must have access to a computer, internet, and an individual email address. De Anza College courses use the Canvas course management system. A laptop or desktop computer is recommended to successfully complete the course. A tablet or phone may not be adequate for all assignments, tests, and course requirements.
